Winter Reflections

A substantial snowfall last weekend was a very tangible reminder that Winter is well and truly here. Personally,  I like Winter. At least the part leading up to Christmas. But I know many find it a challenging time, for different reasons. 

For some, the shorter days and limited daylight impacts on mood. The cold weather can be hard, especially given the cost of heating our homes these days. Severe weather conditions can cause havoc to plans, and restrict us from going out as much as usual. 

Then of course there's Christmas, which can be a reminder for many of losses caused by bereavement or break-ups and break-downs of relationships. The thought of being alone at Christmas can cause unhappiness for some, while others feel daunted by having to spend so much time with others. For neurodivergent and highly sensitive individuals, the sensory overload is overwhelming. Shops blare out loud Christmas tunes on repeat and everything feels generally louder, brighter and glitzier than ever.  For those already struggling, the societal expectations and demands, channelled through the constant stream of "in-your-face" T.V ads can just feel like too much. 

I realise I'm painting rather a gloomy picture of this time of year, but there is a brighter side to this season. While we may be rushing around trying to get things done in preparation for Christmas, nature calls to us to SLOW...RIGHT...DOWN. If you go out into the woods at this time of year, you will probably notice how quiet it is. In this place, we are invited to find our own place of inner stillness. Winter is a time for contemplation. 

Christmas has a special meaning to those with a Christian faith, and there are many other festivals which are observed  by different religions around this time. Even if you do not hold religious beliefs, this can still be a deeply spiritual time as you connect with friends, family and nature, making time for what is important to you, partaking in rituals and family traditions and making memories and meaning. 

If this time of year is difficult for you, you may find it helpful to think about what it is you need and how you will factor these things in around the festivities. There is nothing wrong with taking some time out, making time to rest, doing things "low-key" or reaching out to others for support and connection.
